Although it’s listed here for the sake of convenience as a Central Otago winery, Clay Cliffs is far from any established winegrowing region. It’s out on its own in the Mackenzie Country near Omarama, and has the distinction of being the only vineyard in that arid but starkly beautiful part of the world.
Named after a striking rock formation not far away, Clay Cliffs Estate is on the main Twizel-Cromwell road. The four-hectare vineyard produces Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Muscat and Pinot Blanc, of which about 95 percent is sold through owners Judy and Brian Gilbert’s roadside café. The wines are made by Dean Shaw at the Central Otago Wine Company.
