Long-established farmers at Opaki, the Bunny family planted their first vines in 1993 and have supplied grapes to several Wairarapa wineries, including Gladstone Vineyard and Loopline.
Since 1997 they have also marketed small quantities of wine under their own Waipipi label, including an unusual bottle-fermented, sparkling Chenin Blanc. The base wine for the 2001 vintage sparkling wine, currently on release, was made by Frank Parker of Loopline and the wine was finished at the Morton Estate winery in Katikati.
Waipipi (the name comes from the family farm) has no winery of its own. Red wines are made at Loopline and the whites, which have included Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, are made by arrangement with whichever wineries buy the Bunny family’s grapes. Wines can be tasted at daughter Melissa Bunny’s Esau’s Floral Studio in nearby Masterton (see previous page).
