Saggio Di Vino
Cuisine NZ Restaurant of the Year Awards 2009

This is New Zealand’s only vinothèque, where for more than 18 years Lisa Scholz and Yommi Pawelke have provided a haven for a glass or two of good wine, accompanying it with well-crafted food.
After a recent makeover, the space now wears a coat of fashionably muted tones. It’s open evenings only, wine stars here, with a cellar that offers hundreds of Burgundies and Bordeaux, and some very special wines from Italy, Australia and New Zealand, often in many vintages.
Chef Jean-Michel Poulot’s kitchen provides masterful dishes which, though they sound classical, are often interesting, modern twists on the theme. Our judges loved the carpaccio with crunchy fried capers, a very tasty beef stroganoff, perfectly seasoned and balanced with mild paprika notes, and the beautifully cooked venison.
Sommelier Christian Esser stood out for his knowledge and wine-matching, and we loved the offerings of different volumes for tasting so many wines.
