Karen and Shayne Hitchcock have a 1.2-hectare hillside vineyard on Earnscleugh Road, just across the Clutha River from Alexandra – an area where grapevines are rapidly transforming the landscape. They produce Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot and “a wee bit of Syrah”.
Syrah is a rare grape this far south, but Karen says it has no trouble ripening – unlike the Cabernet Sauvignon they had planted, which managed to ripen only once, in 1999, and has been ripped out.
Though they have previously marketed wine under their own label (named after a nearby tributary of the Clutha), in the past two vintages the Hitchcocks have sold their crop to Gibbston Valley.
