Mount Maude occupies a steep hillside site in the Maungawera Valley, between Lakes Wanaka and Hawea – an area that’s slightly cooler and wetter than the main Central Otago grape-growing areas further south. The steep slope not only maximises exposure to the sun but also promotes air drainage, thus reducing the risk of frost.
Former GP Terry Wilson and his wife Dawn, a potter, have nearly four hectares of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewürztraminer planted on gravelly soils with seams of clay. The vineyard yields about 1000 cases of wine, which is made by Dean Shaw at the Central Otago Wine Company. The 2002 Mount Maude Pinot Noir received a four-star rating from a Cuisine wine panel.
