Marlborough wine identity Allan Scott and his shareholders are the new owners of this Cromwell vineyard, first planted in 1994. Allan, who describes himself as “a Central Otago kid at heart” – he spent his holidays there as a boy – took over Mount Michael in October 2004, but he says that the vineyard will be run as a distinct entity, rather than as part of Allan Scott Wines.
Allan’s winemaker son Joshua will take responsibility for the four-hectare vineyard, which is named after a peak in the Pisa Range immediately behind it. The property is planted in Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, but under the new owners the Chardonnay vines are to be replaced with Riesling. For the time being, the wines will continue to be made at Vinpro in Cromwell.
The 2002 Mount Edward Pinot Noir was awarded four stars by Cuisine.
