Laurie and Anne McAuley left behind careers in teaching and property (Laurie) and physiotherapy (Anne) to establish a four-hectare vineyard in the secluded Lowburn Valley in 1992. After supplying grapes to Gibbston Valley for a number of years, they made their first wine in 1998 – a barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc in the Sancerre style.

The vineyard is planted in Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. Laurie and Anne make the wines themselves and hold them back for at least a year before they are released, to allow them to develop some bottle age and complexity.

The surrounding area is rich in history. Packspur takes its name from the track that was used to pack miners’ supplies from Lowburn over the Pisa Range to the Cardrona goldfields, and the McAuleys still use a water right that dates back to mining activities in 1863.
