Henry van Asch was co-founder, with AJ Hackett, of the world-famous AJ Hackett bungy company. Now the sole owner of the company (AJ having concentrated on overseas activities), Henry has diversified into the wine industry.
Van Asch Wines owns a 2.3-hectare vineyard in the Gibbston Valley, with a further 10 hectares in the Bendigo area; it also buys in grapes from other growers. A tasting room and restaurant are to be opened near the popular Kawarau Bridge bungy, one of Central Otago’s busiest tourism operations, in May 2005.
Grant Taylor (of Gibbston Valley) has been retained as a consultant but the van Asch wines are made at Olssens. The company’s production target is 15,000 cases annually, which may include some wines made with Marlborough grapes.
