This family-owned winery can trace its origins back to the very beginnings of the Central Otago wine industry. Former teachers Bill (full name William Hill) and Gillian Grant planted their first vines in 1973, though it wasn’t until 1987 that their first commercial vintage appeared. Today the company is run by their son David, who shares the winemaking duties with American Gerry Rowland.
Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer are produced at William Hill Wines, and most of the fruit is grown in the estate vineyard on sandy terraces east of the Clutha River between Alexandra and Clyde.
There’s a second two-hectare vineyard beside the Manuherikia River, where the the winery’s café is located. Fruit is also sourced from two other vineyards in the Alexandra area. The Shaky Bridge Café, housed in a restored miner’s cottage, is named after the old stone footbridge that leads there from the town.
