“Our best vintage ever,” says Catherine Vosper of the 2004 harvest, describing the resulting wine as “unctuous, deeply coloured and aromatic”. The vineyard produces two Bordeaux-style wines, both predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon: the premium Miro and the softer Archipelago, which has a higher proportion of Merlot in the blend.
Catherine is the viticulturist and her partner, Auckland GP Barnett Bond, makes the wine, which is mostly sold by mail order. The 2.6-hectare vineyard, on a steep slope overlooking the sea, has the same name as their daughter.
A recent milestone was the shipment of Miro’s first exports to the US, where Catherine says wine enthusiasts get very excited at the discovery of an emerging new winery far away on the other side of the world.
