The Berry family are graziers on the west side of the Waipara Valley who carved 25 hectares off their 319-hectare sheep farm to cultivate grapes. So far 11 hectares on east-facing limestone slopes have been planted in Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Scott Berry, the son of Keith and Ruth Berry, has had winemaking experience in France and now makes wines not just for the Waipara Downs label but for other local vineyard owners as well. The family vineyard also supplies other producers.
Keith says the winery has the potential capacity to handle 300 tonnes of grapes by 2006 – roughly sufficient for 25,000 cases of wine.
