Destination dining does not always make for the happiest of marriages. But a ferry trip to Waiheke and a perch at Three Seven Two – across the road from the beautiful Onetangi beach – will see you renewing your vows. Chef Bronwen Laight is responsible for a compact and seasonal menu that is big on bright, fresh flavours. She adds little tickles to the plainest-sounding things. Her vegetarian offerings – for example, chickpea crêpe, cashew and kale curry with coconut and green apple sambal, coconut yogurt and coriander – are enough to make even the meat-eater think again. Rather than rest on the laurels of the environment, the team enhances the island experience. Notable, too, is the fact that this is not a vineyard restaurant. With its seafront setting, a choice of seating (indoors or out) and a garden bar that salutes Waiheke wines, you’ll easily find yourself at home.

IN BRIEF: 372 - a Waiheke number worthy of note
