If you’re looking for accessible, shareable food on the fringes of our capital city, look no further than this pan-Asian restaurant which has won a loyal following and is very popular among the hospo crowd for late-night dining. With sociable, big, long tables and an atmosphere that epitomises a no-fuss, no-bother breeziness where everyone tucks in and there’s a feel-good vibe, they’re on to a winner. You can tell that this is a collaborative environment to work in and the staff are passionate about a menu that mixes sophistication and playfulness, served up with deceptive simplicity. Chef Johnon MacDonald and co- owner Kat Strand (pictured above) are naturals in the hospitality game. Johnon displays in-depth knowledge of the intricacies of eastern combinations and makes as much as he can from scratch; smoking, fermenting and pickling his way to great depths of flavour. Try the yellow curry beef doughnut with Kewpie mayo for starters, or the tea-smoked duck with sweet-and-sour hoisin. Another fave is satay spinach dumplings in caramelised black vinegar, while top of our vegetarian list is the tempura cauliflower with strange flavour sauce and chilli oil. Come here with friends and leave with a few more.

METROPOLITAN RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR 2024BROUGHT TO YOU BY GREENSTONE CREEK

Greenstone Creek is ANZCO Foods’ award-winning, premium grass-fed beef brand. Hand-selected and aged for exceptional tenderness and taste, only the finest cuts are selected to wear the Greenstone Creek name, meaning there is very little beef of this quality on the market. It can be found in fewer than 15 of New Zealand’s top restaurants at any one time – find out where you can try it at greenstonecreek.co.nz.
