Showcasing an outstanding New Zealand wine story in a location that is as awesome as it is beautiful, Craggy Range also boasts, in Casey McDonald, a chef who is at the top of his game. Casey has impeccable credentials, having helmed the award-winning restaurant empire of Melbournite Andrew McConnell, and his influence is evident here. Sandwiched between the glorious Te Mata peak and a view of the vines, diners get to enjoy accomplished creations that often draw inspiration from the kitchen gardens. This is not a challenging menu for diners, but it is superbly executed. The snacks are sensational and benefit from the added bling of housemade pickles, ferments and preserves. The pasta is exceptional – gnocchi dressed in a richly braised rabbit and a butter, herb and tarragon sauce is heavenly – and Casey’s potato focaccia bread will forever remain on our death-row list. As a backdrop to the exquisite cuisine, comfort and luxury combine effortlessly. The service is accomplished yet friendly, the backdrop is stunning and the wine list, naturally, world class. There’s every excuse to want to linger longer – and longer still. Terry and Mary Peabody have created a legacy in their winery built on family values, and the restaurant, with a menu that champions regional producers, is a jewel in the crown.
