‘Food to change your life’ the cover proclaims. Wow that’s a big claim, so let’s unpack it and see what Jamie has for us in this, his 30th, book. There is the bright, straightforward and enthusiastic food that you know of a Jamie recipe, but this time the focus is on healthy eating to boost your wellbeing (and he has a nutrition qualification so I assume he knows what he’s talking about). It can be baffling to decipher the conflicting messages that bombard us almost daily about food, so Jamie’s promise here is that the nutritional thinking has been done for you and he’s all about showing everything you can have, not taking things away or banning ‘bad’ foods. Start with the 50 healthy hacks on topics such as shopping, sleeping, eating and living then, if you want to go all in, there’s a 2-week kickstarter meal plan – not a diet in the weight-loss sense, but suggestions of three meals a day to get you into healthy habits and take the hard work out of looking after yourself. Even if you skip straight to the recipes you’ll find what Jamie has built his career on: doable dishes that taste good, don’t take too long, won’t leave you with a pantry full of fancy ingredients going to waste and all couched in language you understand. Tahini mushroom noodles give you a plate of contrasting hot and cold, crunchy and soft that’s on the table in 11 minutes; a fish filo parcel shows that healthy can be a bit posh, too; and don’t think that comfort is forgone as traybakes, curries and soups all have their delicious moments. This is a book to show you that healthy isn’t hard and Jamie fans will give it a good workout. TW
