It’s great to have a high-quality seafood restaurant in the heart of old Auckland that walks the talk without compromise when it comes to sustainability and ethical fishing. The eclectic dining room feels alive and upbeat, blending beautifully into the entrance of the Hotel Britomart. You’ll recognise the names here: the 30-something duo of chef Tom Hishon and business partner Josh Helm (née Orphans Kitchen, Daily Bread). They have forged a name for themselves as leaders in promoting local produce and pairing it with primarily trans-Tasman wines. Here in the all-day Kingi kitchen, the highly talented Hishon betters his reputation. Check out his wood- roasted oyster mushrooms for starters and be sure to include the superb pan-roasted snapper with white kimchi, Granny Smith and hemp heart in your selection. Kingi is ideal for those impromptu drinks and sharing plates but works equally well for that more intimate meal.

IN BRIEF: Ethical eating in the truest sense
