The Powder Keg

The Powderkeg Restaurant & Bar is an Ohakune institution, much loved by locals, tourists and of course, skiers in the snow season as this is the closest town to the Turoa and Whakapapa skifields. Established in 1989, the restaurant kitchen and bar opens at 7am and serves food and drinks until late every day.

Skiers gather for hearty breakfasts, returning for late afternoon après-ski snacks and generous fresh cuisine at lunch and dinner. Situated at the start of The Old Coach Road, The Keg, as it is fondly known, is the fun centre of the Powder Keg Chateau with accommodation in suites and cottages. Burgers are the mainstay of the lunch menu and the kitchen kicks up a notch at dinner with the famous Powderkeg house-smoked pork ribs, a spinach and cashew ravioli with marinated artichoke, portobello mushroom, roast capsicum, olives, spinach, napoli sauce and grana Padano, and much more.
