The Vineyard Story
The Bay of Islands, set in New Zealand’s ‘winterless North’ is a rising star in the winemaking world. The warm and sometimes frisky maritime climate and clay and sandstone soils produce distinctive wines with intense tropical fruit and dark berry flavours, complex mineral notes and a hint of salinity carried on the ocean breezes.
Our Vineyard
Set on a historic peninsula in New Zealand’s stunning Bay of Islands, The Landing is a single-estate vineyard and winery producing beautifully crafted wines with intense flavours and complex mineral characteristics. The Landing’s vineyard extends over 33 rolling coastal acres, bordering forest and wetlands where kiwi and other native bird's roam.
Climate
The warm and exposed costal climate creates an intensity and complexity of flavour, while The Landing’s vineyard is sited in a protective cradle of hills, enjoying a sheltered aspect through the long, balmy days of summer.
History
The Landing has a viticultural history 200 years in the making. It takes its name from its history as a place where early Polynesian and European immigrants to Aotearoa New Zealand made landfall and built new lives in a new country.
Philosophy
Relationships are built at The Landing through mutual respect. They honour their landscape, their heritage, culture and people in their differences, diversity and common ground.
Winemaking
Ben’s winemaking style is led by the grapes, season by season, using a light hand to “see what the fruit is telling us”. He enjoys working at a boutique label where he can guide the wines through every step of the winemaking process from the ground up. This responsive approach coaxes the best from the terroir and has led to The Landing wines gathering numerous gold medals and acclaim from critics.

Sustainability
“At The Landing, our whenua (land) is our heritage and our future. Caring for our landscape through sustainable practices and honouring our cultural history are two of our guiding principles”.
The Landing was founded in 1999 with the intention of preserving, restoring, and developing a unique piece of land with significant historical, cultural, and environmental value into a place where local and international visitors could enjoy the best of New Zealand.
Since The Landing was founded, more than 1.2 million native trees and plants have been planted across the property, with over 10,000 more trees, ferns and grasses added every year. Particular focus has been given to restoring wetland areas as they are an ecologically important habitat for native birds and freshwater fish species. Aided by a predator control programme, this lush regenerated forest and wetland now attracts a rich native birdlife, including one of the densest kiwi populations in the country, rare ducks and shorebird species.
