THESE ANNUAL AWARDS have become the go-to guide for the best wines that are not only reasonably priced, but also widely available – music to the ears of any wine-lover keen to nab a great wine at a time when we’re all watching our wallet.
There’s no doubt professionally judged wines that win top awards are considered world class. So often, though, they come at an equally epic price point. Not so with the New World Wine Awards, where their award-winning selection has some great-value options for entertaining this festive season. Going from wine store to wine store trying to hunt down one of these great wines isn’t an issue either with each winning wine readily available to pop in your trolley at New World stores throughout New Zealand.
The awards, now in their 23rd year, had more than 1,000 entries, with each wine evaluated blind by a team of experienced wine judges. These experts, who collectively bring decades of experience to the wine-tasting table, only see the wine in the glass and no labels or indication of price is given. This means the winning wines are a true reflection of quality – regardless of price.
The awards are chaired by Central Otago winemaker and seasoned wine judge Jen Parr supported by deputy chair Murray Cook. Both winemakers were excited by the results from the 2025 awards. “This year’s Top 50 is a celebration of diversity, discovery and deliciousness,” says Jen. “From bold reds and elegant whites to vibrant rosés and festive bubbles, there’s something here for every taste and every occasion all for under $30.”
Drinking world-class wines couldn’t be easier thanks to the New World Wine Awards and below are just a few highlights that the Cuisine team will be sipping throughout the year. The Top 50 wines are all under $30; to take advantage of the terrific value, head to your local New World between 6 October to 9 November or while stocks last.
