Born in Hong Kong, with a childhood spent in Singapore and teenage years in New Zealand, once cooking had captured her Van Prehn headed to the restaurant meccas of Melbourne and London. Back in New Zealand while in her first head chef role at Scotch Wine Bar in Blenheim, celebrated chef Al Brown came to dinner. He liked it so much he called Cuisine editor Kelli Brett, the restaurant was assessed and awarded one hat in the 2019 Cuisine Good Food Awards. Van Prehn has now gone on to open Alta on Karangahape Road, her first foray into being an owner/operator within the highly competitive Auckland restaurant landscape, and has earned a coveted hat in this year’s Cuisine Good Food Awards. High praise for her first year as a restaurateur and definitely a sign of a chef to watch.
