Refined, quiet beauty made to last a lifetime is the ethos behind Public Record, the new venture from Yuka O’Shannessy, formerly of Astute Assembly. Her aesthetic was forged by a childhood in Japan where the work of artisans was celebrated, and with Public Record she draws out the personal narratives, skills and traditional practices of the makers. By cultivating strong personal relationships and supporting both established and emerging artists, Yuka can offer the work of the very best and most sought-after Japanese artists, such as this delicate aqua-tinted compote (raised plate) by Mayuka Ogawa. Though focussing on offerings from Japan, the retail and gallery space on Auckland’s Ponsonby Rd offers a finely curated range of fashion, fine crafts and designer homewares from both local and international makers, and an eclectic line-up of exhibitions and workshops in traditional Japanese crafts.
