An avenue of fig trees leads to the charming Black Barn Bistro, a picturesque venue gazing out over the vineyards and slopes of Hawke’s Bay. A cosy open fire, generous leather couches and a comfy bar area welcome patrons to sit and have a casual drink. Unsurprisingly, Black Barn wines are recommended to accompany each dish, but if you choose to go solo there’s a plethora of other choices, as well as a gratifying selection of beers and cocktails, sodas and spirits. Daniel Pistone’s skilfull hand in the kitchen is evident in a dish of Freedom Farm pork with cauliflower, prunes and caramelised milk powder, the pork delicate with a perfect consistency, and the cauliflower fresh and full of flavour. Bright and fresh notes are also the star in a dessert of chocolate pave, sour cherries, ginger and caramelised puff pastry.
