NZ & International Méthode Traditionnelle

October 25, 2025 (Cuisine magazine Issue 232)

MARY-THÉRÈSE BLAIR finds our homegrown méthode traditionnelle offers superb quality at a more-affordable price.

There is always a lot of judging room chat when it comes to méthode traditionnelle, this year revolving around the fact that this wine style is constantly increasing in quality. The improvements are marked and with ten of the top 11 wines hailing from home soil, it’s an incredible endorsement of the progress New Zealand is making in this wine style. Through the judging process, improvements in the sourcing of fruit, vineyard management and work in the winery is evident with a truly remarkable end product to enjoy.

The flip side of this is that the price is increasing, with méthodes appearing to have a higher increase in price than other New Zealand wines. In my opinion, this is a course correction with the price now appropriately reflecting the quality of these wines as well as the time and skill needed to produce them. With Champagne prices heading towards unobtainable levels, it is heartening to know that there are so many genuine alternatives from our own backyard.

Deutz Marlborough Cuvée Blanc de Blancs 2019

Although I’m an import, I can genuinely say that I feel kiwi enough after almost 20 years in New Zealand that I get a glow of pride when a true kiwi legend rises to the top.  In the world of wine Deutz Marlborough is legendary. Way ahead of its time in 1990 Deutz was a collaboration between prestigious chateaux Deutz based in Aÿ in Champagne and what was then Montana Wines in Marlborough. This was the first example of a Champagne house lending their name, and by extension their legacy and prestige to a New Zealand sparkling wine.  With a vision to combine old world winemaking techniques with new world grapes, there is no doubt that the team at Montana had their eyes on the prize when it came to benchmarking New Zealand sparkling wines against those of the very best and most respected sparkling wines in the world - Champagne.

While the world around the bottle has changed considerably though the years, in fact the iconic Montana brand no longer exists, but it’s clear what's in the bottle still feels as special as it did some thirty five years ago upon its very first release, our judges certainly seem to think so describing this wine as slightly reductive on the nose with lovely freshness, autolysis and toast evident on the nose. The palate is lithe and bright with a zingy freshness that dances in the mouth. The acid is taut and steely giving the wine both presence and a length that feels endless. A timeless kiwi classic.
