NZ & International Sauvignon Blanc

It’s worth looking to 2024 as well as the new year wines for a great drinking sauvignon blanc, says MARY-THÉRÈSE BLAIR

TRADITIONALLY sauvignon blanc tasting results tend to be biased towards the most recent vintage. These wines are, for the most part, ‘drink and enjoy now’ wines that don’t benefit from ageing. Young, zippy and zingy is the recipe for success with sauvignon blanc.

Our results, however, reflect a different view with as many 2024 sauvignon blancs gracing the top table as 2025 examples. While 2025 had relatively good weather with a cool start to the growing season, what followed was large crops of what is already a vigorously growing vine, resulting in numerous examples that failed to achieve the aromas and flavours that are ideal for top-notch sauvignon blanc. Don’t be dismayed, there are 2025 gems to be found and our judges have done the work and found the best. But also keep an eye out for sauvignon from 2024 – a superb vintage. These wines were so good upon release that they continue to shine and still represent great drinking.

Wairau River Sauvignon Blanc 2025 (Marlborough)

THE CONNECTION between animal feed and wine might seem tenuous but in the world of the Rose family, owners of Wairau River Wines, there’s a direct link. Winery founders Phil and Chris Rose were originally using their patch of land in Marlborough to grow a lucerne crop – a legume used for animal feed – for export. Then the economic crisis hit in the 1970s, challenging their livelihood. Still committed to growing, and perhaps with an eye on the changing nature of Marlborough at that time, the forward-thinking Roses decided to plant grapes, establishing their vineyard in 1978. Hand-planted, the vines thrived and the family segued nicely into contract grape growing. Due to the quality of their grapes, demand was high so in 1991 the Rose family decided to turn their hand to making their own wine from their grapes. Wairau River was born and as time went on the little boys who had grown up on the vineyard, became men and decided to take part in the business with Hamish as viticulturist working side by side with his brother Sam as winemaker. The first sip of this sauv, shows why growing grapes and making wine is flowing through the veins of the talented Rose sons. The nose is resplendent with nectarine, lychee and passionfruit with just a hint of red capsicum peeking through. The palate is concentrated and intensely fruity with a juicy mouthwatering midpalate that keeps you coming back for more. The citrus sweetness present is perfectly balanced by the fresh crisp acidity. Well-weighted, this top sauvignon blanc is lovely, luscious and long.
