WHY CHOOSE THIS RESTAURANT?

Dunedin has finally got what it deserves: a groovy, vegetarian south Indian restaurant true to its roots.

ABOUT THE FOOD

Dosa Etc is just that: a dosa-predominant restaurant with additional dishes which beautifully scaffold the south Indian flavor-filled ethos. Prices are such that you could work your way through the entire menu and still have some change. But if you were staggering your choices, you can’t go past the signature masala dosa, with its tastes that pop in abundance. Other options include the dreamy cheese dosa zinging with chilli. Everything is made daily in-house and in small batches to honour the origins of these dishes. For another ‘Etc’, try the idli and all their glorious chutney partners. Or maybe the blackboard special (a delightfully puffy aloo poori was our lucky number). By default, vegans get a good look-in, too. The team doesn’t take its foot off the accelerator when the mains are done. The pineapple kesaribath makes a show-stopping semolina finale. Pair it with hand-pulled coffee-chicory deliciousness. It’s food to placate the most homesick ex-pat, as well as excite all-comers.

ABOUT THE CHEF

Dr Srikanth (Sri) Subbarao and his wife Vinutha (Vinu) Subramanya run this operation. After 16 years in Ōtepoti, an urge for culinary authenticity drove them to Hanover St and their first food venture. He does the dosas; she’s responsible for everything else. “We use recipes passed on by my mother, grandmother and sister,” says Vinu.

ABOUT THE TEAM

There are more strings to this family bow. Daughter Deepthi Srikanth helps out in the restaurant when she’s home from her studies in Melbourne, and runs their social media presence.

OF NOTE

Sri has a PhD in climate change and renewable energy. He runs a consulting firm working on climate change in the Pacific Islands, Africa and for the UN on his non-restaurant days.
