There’s a very simple reason why chef/owner Kevin Hopgood is a regular on our awards list. He’s simply very bloody good. He and head chef/business partner Aaron Ballantyne have been doing their very tremendous stuff here for close to two decades. Their skills are amply served by an enthusiastic team who ensure a fiercely loyal customer base is rewarded time and again. The menu trumpets, for starters, a goats’ cheese soufflé buoyed by whatever ingredients are in season. And seasonality is a big feature in this line-up, which showcases other gems covering the gamut of fish, meat and vege in good-looking, comforting fashion. It’s plain to see Aaron has evolved an outstanding menu where he uses masterful techniques to create stylish, yet relaxed, food. Can’t decide what to have from the à la carte menu? Never fear – there’s a five-course tasting option and a mightily matchable drinks list, too.
