Small is big at Londo. By that we mean it’s a minuscule spot that boasts a generosity of welcome and taste. Also big is chef Robert Fairs’ reputation. He’s the guy who was once head chef at our former award-winner Roots in Lyttelton. Now he and Harry Findlay have set up shop in Merivale. Harry is in charge of the drinks – and he mixes such a mean cocktail that other hospo heavyweights come here for that very purpose. Be warned: blink, and you’ll miss Robert’s fine menu since new ideas are forever rolling off the tiny pass. Some worthy dispatches of recent times include Brussels sprouts with just the right amount of crunch, nestled within stracciatella and wild onion. Perch at the bar and watch Robert in action or grab a seat at the tables surrounding it to dip into his dishes. Sip Harry’s creations and you will be one truly happy being.
