Milford has not merited much mention in these pages in the past – but Stanley Avenue stamps this North Shore address firmly on our map. Consider first the fit-out: it’s gorgeous. Then there’s the expansive wine rack. And what about the food? Modern interpretations of classic bistro dishes, plus some upper-echelon grazing plates and snacks. Chef Jono Beattie dishes up a combination of premium ingredients that prove comforting and familiar yet are still able to surprise. Note, the sirloin with its rich red jus, fondant potato, crème fraîche and beetroot pickled onions is a beautiful thing. Beverage offerings are wine-focussed. You’re in great hands here, too. Co-owners Matt Aitchison (he’s the manager and wine pro) and sister Kathryn Aitchison (she’s assistant manager) have serious restaurant cred; the other two partners, Bruce and Lesley Baillie, are Shore locals. This team truly understands how good food and good wine should interact.
