NZ & International Riesling

April 21, 2026 (Cuisine magazine Issue 234)

While not great in number, these rieslings are still making their mark says MARY-THÉRÈSE BLAIR

LAST YEAR I WAS sure we had judged our last flight of riesling. With entries falling to an all time low of eighteen, I felt it was time to say goodbye to the stand-alone segment and segue riesling into the ‘other whites’ category. Then for the first time, this year the entries had a lift – only of two – but reason enough to continue to celebrate this most wondrous of wines. With plantings in New Zealand in decline and sales continuing to fall, the time will come soon enough for riesling to be engulfed into the ‘other’ tasting. But not today, and most certainly not on the watch of these three judges. Our riesling-adoring panel has gleefully picked the best of those entries for those few remaining rizza revellers out there, and they have highlighted what they feel these riesling drinkers deserve – the very best.

Misty Cove Landmark Riesling 2025

I THINK I’VE WRITTEN more about Misty Cove in Cuisine during 2025 than in all the years preceding combined and it gives me so much joy. The brand has been around since 2008 meaning it’s right on track for the ‘overnight success’ that takes a minimum of a decade and a hell of a lot of hard work. It was founded by ex-cricketer Andrew Bailey who has since stepped back from the day- to-day running of the brand trusting a great team to take his vision and help it thrive. Thrive it has and I do believe the brand has stayed true to its roots of wanting to make and sell wine in an unconventional way. Now the following isn’t a word I use often because I’m almost fifty and that means the ick risk is high – but the team at Misty Cove are cool. A mere glance at their ‘About Us’ page tells you these are a group of fun people, following their passion and having a great time doing it – the ultimate recipe for success. This riesling with its vibrant lemon and lime aromatics is polished and clean with a litheness that is borderline ethereal. The palate is focussed and bright with a delicate fruit profile that whispers rather than shouts, but the message is clear and utterly delicious.
